Technical glossary
This page collects the technical terms RebeTech explains publicly. Each term has its own page with a definition, its difference from adjacent concepts, common misunderstandings, and links back to the relevant product page or technical articles.
Fibre optic temperature sensing
- DAS vs DTS — DAS and DTS both use an optical fibre as a distributed sensor but measure different quantities. How to tell which one a project actually needs.
- Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) — DTS turns a fibre optic cable into a continuous temperature sensor along its length: definition, how it differs from point sensors, and where it applies.
- OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) — What an OTDR measures, how time-of-flight locates events along a fibre, and why an OTDR trace and a DTS temperature profile are different things.
- Raman Scattering — How Raman scattering lets an optical fibre report temperature: the Stokes and anti-Stokes bands, why their ratio is used, and what it implies in practice.
- Spatial Resolution and Sampling Interval — What spatial resolution and sampling interval mean in distributed temperature sensing, why a short hot spot gets averaged, and how to specify both.
Meter reading and retrofit
- Modbus RTU — What Modbus RTU is, how it relates to RS485, why a native Modbus RTU uplink matters to integrators, and how it differs from Modbus TCP.
- On-Device Recognition — What it means for a device to recognise a meter reading on-device rather than sending video to a server, and what that changes for a site.
- Reading Pointer and Analog Gauges Remotely — How a pointer or analog gauge with no data output can be read remotely: what optical reading means, how it differs from adding sensors, and where it fits.
